Q1

Is SAFE & SECURE/AdminDesk compatible with the version of MCP installed at my site?

A

Click here to view the SSR levels against which each software release level has been qualified.

Q2

When I run SAFE I get a security violation. Why?

A

To run SAFE successfully one of the following conditions must exist:

  1. The usercode under which you are operating has the SECADMIN attribute set to TRUE. Note that if you are a first-time user of SAFE and you do not already have a usercode set up this way then you must run SYSTEM/MAKEUSER to set the attribute.
  2. The usercode under which you are operating has the REGIMEADMIN attribute set to TRUE. Note that only a SECADMIN user may bestow REGIMEADMIN status. The REGIMEADMIN attribute may be applied to a usercode via SAFE or AdminDesk. Refer to SAFE Manual, Section 7 - Regime Administration or AdminDesk's on-line help.
  3. The usercode under which you are operating is a Delegated Administrator. Refer to SAFE Manual, Section 6 - Function Delegation, or AdminDesk's online help.

Q3

When I try to connect to the ClearPath MCP system via AdminDesk, there is no matching socket on offer. Why?

A

There are several possible reasons:

  1. The SafeLib Library is not running.
  2. There are no AdminDesk Interface tasks configured.
  3. Some or all of the AdminDesk Interface tasks have been suspended.
  4. All the AdminDesk Interface tasks have open connections.
  5. All the ports on offer have pre-defined specific addresses that don’t include your own particular PC.
  6. The ports on offer are using different port/socket numbers to that defined in your own connection properties.

Use the SafeLib AX command STATUS to get more information (on release 3.3 pr 1 onwards, you can use ADMINDESK STATUS).

AdminDesk Interface tasks may be reconfigured using LOCUM/SAFELIB/SETUP and also through the AdminDesk Configuration Menu (if there is an already open AdminDesk connection). Suspended AdminDesk Interface tasks may be reactivated via the AX ADMINDESK n GO command. For information on configuring connections, port/socket numbers, ipaddresses and address pools, refer to the AdminDesk On-line Help.

Q4

When I log on via AdminDesk, I get the message 'Although you were logged on successfully, you do not have access to any SafeLib functions'. Why?

A

AdminDesk communicates with the SafeLib library via an AdminDesk Interface Task. In order to perform administrative functions via AdminDesk the usercode under which you are operating must have:

  1. SECADMIN status
  2. REGIMEADMIN status, or
  3. Delegated Administrator status.

Q5

Why are certain functions in AdminDesk greyed-out?

A

There are three possible reasons:

  1. Not all modules of SAFE & SECURE are licensed.
  2. A new version of AdminDesk has been installed on the PC but the corresponding version of SafeLib has not been installed on the connected MCP system. If the new version of AdminDesk contains new features, these will be unavailable until the corresponding version of SafeLib is installed.
  3. A Security Administrator has access to ALL AdminDesk functions. If the usercode under which you are using does not have the usercode attribute SECADMIN set to TRUE then a number of functions will be unavailable.

Q6

Can I administer multiple systems simultaneously?

A

AdminDesk allows you to connect to and administer security on all your ClearPath MCP systems from a single session. See AdminDesk's on-line help for further details.

Q7

Will I have to find extra funding for the AdminDesk product?

A

No. AdminDesk provides a PC interface for the SAFE & SECURE software package and is provided free of charge when one or more SAFE modules are purchased.

Q8

Where can I find the latest version of the SAFE & SECURE software product?

A

SAFE & SECURE may be downloaded from our website. Click here if you wish to download the latest version.

Q9

Does Locum provide training courses?

A

Yes. Locum provides training courses for all areas of our software.

Training courses are provided upon request and are tailored to an organisation's requirements. To request a training course or to find out more details contact Kevin.Stones@LocumSoftware.co.uk.

Q10

What is the difference between Templates and Profiles?

A

Templates and profiles are similar in that they both contain a number of fixed attributes that may be applied to a usercode. The difference between a profile and a template is that a profile is used during usercode creation and modification and is a simple method of assigning a number of usercode attributes and values to a new user. Thereafter there is NO association between the profile and the usercode. Templates are assigned to existing usercodes via the TEMPLATENAME attribute. When the attributes of the template change, these changes will be applied to all usercodes associated with the template.

Note that a profile may contain the name of a template. When a usercode is created via a profile containing a template name, firstly, the attributes of the profile are applied, and then the template attributes. Creating a usercode from a profile containing a TEMPLATENAME attribute will associate the usercode with a template.

Q11

What is Reference Data in AdminDesk?

A

Reference data is used to populate the drop-down menus displayed on property pages. The use of reference data is optional. If used, reference data will provide an AdminDesk user with a list of possible values to which a system parameter or a user attribute may be set.

Reference data is obtained from various sources and certain types of reference data may be maintained via AdminDesk. For example the values associated with the CHARGECODE usercode attribute may be maintained via AdminDesk. When setting this attribute for a particular user the values associated with this attribute are displayed for selection.

Refer to AdminDesk's on-line help for further details.

Q12

On which versions of Windows will your PC-based software run?

A

Our PC-based software, which includes AdminDesk, SafeSurvey Client, SecureAudit Client, Locum RealTime Monitor (RealTime Monitor and RealTime Config) and PCDIR, have been qualified to run on Windows XP SP2 or later, Windows 2003 Server SP1 or later, Windows Vista, Windows 2008 Server and Windows 7.

Refer to the product's on-line help for further details.

Q13

When I run SIMPLEINSTALL I get a security violation. Why?

A

SIMPLEINSTALL can be run under any usercode provided that the usercode attribute SECADMIN for that usercode has been set to TRUE. If you do not already have a usercode set up this way then you must run SYSTEM/MAKEUSER to set the attribute.

Q14

Is SAFE & SECURE/AdminDesk compatible with InfoGuard?

A

Yes. Both products can co-exist in the same Clearpath MCP environment and in many ways complement each other. However, there are a few areas where both products offer similar functionality. Safe & Secure will recognize the presence of InfoGuard and, where features overlap, will ensure that there are no conflicts. In addition, SAFE & SECURE and AdminDesk provide an interface that facilitates the maintenance of InfoGuard features.

Q15

Are the SAFE & SECURE/AdminDesk messages encrypted?

A

Messages containing passwords should never be sent across networks in clear text. Therefore, when CHAIN propagates a password, the password is always crunched before transmission.

AdminDesk and SafeLib use a 'private' algorithm to encrypt messages. By default all messages that may contain a password are encrypted. This default may be changed so that ALL messages are encrypted. To change the encryption level go to AdminDesk's Connection drop-down menu, select Properties and then click the Global tab. The default encryption level is set at Locum's proprietary 48 bit encryption, but you can select AES 128 bit encryption. We recommend using the highest level of encryption supported by your systems.

Q16

What machines is Safe & Secure qualified to run on?

A

Click here to see a list of machines that the current release of Safe & Secure is qualified to run on.

Q17

Which MCP levels is SAFE & SECURE qualified against?

A

Click on the Release Levels button. The second table, entitled Release Level Compatibilities, gives this information.
